During the War of the Five, Stannis Baratheon lost Storm's End. In his attempt to gain the iron throne, he never reclaimed it. Years later, the Baratheon's of King's Landing wanted the Baratheon family in command of Storm's End since the king had no children at the time to claim it. They decided one of Robert's bastards would be sufficient. They chose Edric Storm since he had already lived at Storm's End with his uncle Renly. They discovered him at Lys and proceeded to put him in command. This was a small war for the Stormlands, which Edric successfully gained. Edric trained his sons to be more battle oriented than most Houses. This takes root in Robert's warrior spirit. This line of Baratheons are very different from the ones of King's Landing since their ancestry traces directly to Robert. Edric never spoiled his sons and that tradition has continued. Ian also has a close relationship with the Starks, particularly Bryen Stark. They were both wards under the Lannisters of Casterly Rock. They spent several years together as best friends. As such, Ian is very close to the entire Stark family.
